HARWOOD, Md. (WMAR) — Two Anne Arundel County Police officers are hospitalized after crashing their departmental cruiser while on the way to the scene of another crash.

It happened Thursday around 3:19 p.m. in the area of Solomons Island and Mill Swamp Road in Harwood.

With lights and siren, the officers were trying to get through a traffic jam caused by the collision they were responding to.

When they crossed into the northbound lane to get around the backup, a woman trying to get out of the jam herself made a u-turn out of the southbound lane and into the officer's path, causing the two vehicles to crash.

The officer's and the driver were each taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the woman's u-turn was unsafe but don't think speed, drugs, or alcohol played a role.

No charges have been filed, and it's unclear if any traffic citations were issued.
