ST SANDY POINT PARK — More than 10 thousand people are jumping into the Chesapeake Bay for a good cause. The Polar Bear Plunge is taking place at St Sandy Point Park.

People tiptoed, ran and some even dove into the chilly waters all to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland.

Members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department were among those brave enough to participate, but Chief Tim Altomare says it's worth it.

"When you see the look on these athletes faces when you come to events, it's worth every bit of it," Chief Altomare. "This and every other thing we do all year, we should celebrate it every day."

On Friday, the department had 84 plungers.

They raised $17,000 on Friday and tomorrow, 80 more recruits and staff will plunge, raising over $9,000.
