MILLERSVILLE, Md. — A single-family home in Riva caught on fire after the roof was struck by lightning Thursday afternoon, the Anne Arundel Fire Department said.

The home’s occupants and neighbors called 911 , saying lightning struck the house, and then fire and smoke could be seen coming out of the roof of a home in the 3000 block of Pike Drive at about 3:41 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke coming from the single-story home’s eaves and roof. It took about 20 minutes for the 43 firefighters from Anne Arundel County and Annapolis Fire Departments to bring the one-alarm fire under control.

The Red Cross is assisting the three adults and two children who have been displaced by the fire. No one was reported injured. The damage to the home was assessed at about $100,000.
