Anne Arundel Police say officers responded to Annapolis Road at Walker Drive around 9:25 p.m. for a report of two pedestrians struck.

Police say two Peak Incorporated construction workers were in the process of coning off the right lane of northbound Annapolis Road.

Coning was almost complete, when a 1994 GMC pickup entered the closed lane and struck the two workers.

The driver of the pickup, 63-year-old Valerie Matthews, was not injured in the crash.

Both workers however, were taken to Shock Trauma for treatment. Unfortunately, due to the seriousness of his injuries 56-year-old Walter Gonzalez-Lopez was pronounced dead sometime Sunday.

The other worker, 19-year-old Edin Romero-Maldonado, is still at Shock Trauma.

Officers suspected Mathews was driving under the influence, thus failed to adhere to the lane closure. Matthews was taken for an alcohol test after the crash.

The Traffic Safety Section is handing the investigation and any charges will be after review by the State’s Attorney.
