Bateman, of Pasadena, was arrested in April for allegedly assaulting his wife, Elsie. He denied doing so, and Elsie Bateman also released a statement recanting her earlier statement to police.

She said then she did not wish to press charges.

According to court records, she invoked her marital privilege not to testify, and Bateman was acquitted.

Bateman's lawyer, Peter O'Neill, said his client was "grateful" he was acquitted, and pointed to his long record of public service in Anne Arundel County.

Bateman, who was first elected sheriff in 2006, has said he plans to run for re-election in 2018.
