According to court records, she invoked her marital privilege not to testify, and Bateman was acquitted.

Bateman's lawyer, Peter O'Neill, said his client was "grateful" he was acquitted, and pointed to his long record of public service in Anne Arundel County.

Bateman, who was first elected sheriff in 2006, has said he plans to run for re-election in 2018.
