The Annapolis Police Department is warning residents about a recent utility scam.
The caller claims to be with BGE demanding payment or your power will be shut off. A business owner on Main Street paid more than $1,000 dollars and a homeowner was tricked into paying $400.
"They ask for payment in a way that's unusual," said Cpl. Amy Miguez. "They usually ask for payment by Green Dot MoneyPak cards, which are available at everyday convenient stores. They then ask for you to call them back, give them the numbers of the cards and then the money is immediately drained."
Police stress that BGE will never ask you to pay for a bill using Green Dot MoneyPak cards.
