A 56-year-old woman was killed in a car crash in Lothian Thursday.

At 1:45 p.m. officers were dispatched to a two vehicle crash on southbound Southern Maryland Blvd MD-4 at Fishers Station Road in Lothian.

Sharon Alderson, 56, of Lothian, was turning left from the stop sign on southbound Fisher’s Station Road when her vehicle crossed the northbound lanes of MD-4. She continued forward into the southbound travel lanes of MD-4 and stopped.

Troy Wade Jr., 20, of St. Leonard, was traveling southbound on MD-4 and hit the passenger side of her car.

Alderson was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Wade suffered minor injuries and was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital for treatment.

According to police, the preliminary cause of the crash is a failure of Alderson to yield right of way.

There is no indication that alcohol contributed to the crash though speed and prescription drug use are being investigated, police said.
