A Maryland city is being sued for what an environmental group says is repeated violations of the Clean Water Act at its wastewater treatment plant.
The Frederick News-Post reports the Potomac Riverkeeper Network filed a lawsuit Wednesday that says the Frederick has repeatedly exceeded its yearly limit of nitrogen and failed to complete required upgrades.
A filter to remove more nitrogen from treated sewage as required by law has been repeatedly delayed and isn't scheduled to be finished until August. The city facility was one of 12 significant municipal sewage plants found to be releasing more nutrients than allowed.
Public Works Director Zack Kershner says the city's making progress on the upgrades, despite recent flooding events. City Attorney Saundra Nichols declined comment, saying the city hadn't yet been served.
