An Atlantic City police officer rescued a 10-year-old Philadelphia boy who couldn't free himself after his foot got stuck in a wood groin while swimming after lifeguards had gone home.

Darrell Catanio and another officer responded shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday following a report of a swimmer screaming for help. The officers saw the boy in chest-high water with waves continually crashing over his head.

Catanio entered the water and freed the boy's foot from the wood groin, which was installed to prevent beach erosion. He soon yanked the foot free and carried the boy to a nearby tent.

The boy suffered a lower leg injury and was treated at the scene. Catanio suffered an undisclosed injury and was treated at a hospital.

The boy's name was not disclosed.
