BALTIMORE — The first ultra-cold freezer that the University of Maryland Medical System has purchased for storage of the Pfizer COVID vaccine has arrived.

It arrived at the University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMS's flagship academic medical center in downtown Baltimore.

They are expecting delivery of several additional freezers to other UMMS hospitals across the state in the coming days and are awaiting a decision from the FDA regarding approval of the Pfizer vaccine.

UMMS is working with state partners at the Maryland Department of Health to plan for the initial vaccine distribution to frontline healthcare workers, which they expect will begin next week across their 13-hospital system.
