Pedestrian killed crossing Ritchie Hwy in Glen Burnie

GLEN BURNIE — A pedestrian was killed while crossing Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie.

On Saturday, at about 5:51 p.m., officers responded to the area of Ritchie Hwy southbound and 6th Ave in Glen Burnie for a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

The investigation revealed that an unknown man pedestrian was crossing Ritchie Hwy south of 6th Ave outside of a crosswalk. Police say this area is dark, and the pedestrian was dressed in all dark clothing with no reflective features.

For unknown reasons, the pedestrian was either bent over or crouched down in the center lane of Ritchie Hwy. At that same time, a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling southbound on Ritchie Hwy when the vehicle hit the pedestrian in the roadway.

The pedestrian came to rest in the center grassy median and the driver of the Chevrolet stopped and called 911 for help.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.

The pedestrian was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

During the preliminary investigation, police say the primary cause of the crash is pedestrian error.

It is unknown if alcohol or drug use may be a contributing factor in the crash on the part of the pedestrian.

The Chevrolet driver is not believed to have been using drugs or alcohol prior to the collision. The Traffic Safety Section is handling the investigation.
