CROFTON, Md. — A woman is dead after a tree fell onto a house in Crofton Tuesday.

Anne Arundel County Fire officials say it happened in the 1500 block of Farlow Avenue, just before 9 p.m.

The owner ran to his neighbors because a tree had fallen on the back of his home and his wife was missing.

35 firefighters from departments all over the area responded. They found extensive structural damage; enough so that it took an hour and 45 minutes for crews to secure the utilities and stabilize the home to pull the woman from the rubble.

"We have a team that specializes and trains for this type of collapse response so, while this is a very tragic situation, it’s something they train constantly to be able to do," said AACo Fire Battalion Chief Russ Davies.

Davies called it a tragic act of nature because windy conditions are presumed to be the cause.

"We know about an hour before, around 8 o'clock, the National Weather Service put an advisory out for Anne Arundel County saying that there was the potential for 50mph winds up until 10 o'clock," said Davies.

The victim's name was not released but fire officials said she was in her early 50s.
