OCEAN CITY, Md. — Ocean City Police are investigating a violent assault Tuesday night on the Boardwalk near 4th Street.

Video of the incident circulated all day Wednesday on social media.

It shows different groups of young people in some kind of verbal argument.

Things quickly turn physical as several members of one group attack and repeatedly punch a male.

The victim collapses on a bench and seems to lose consciousness, before tumbling to the ground. During the beating, video shows one of the suspects trying to pull the victim's pants down.

Police don't appear to be anywhere in sight throughout the entire incident, as dozens of onlookers are seen gathered filming with their camera phones.

In a statement police said the assault started around 12:43 a.m., but no one called 911 until a few minutes later.

By the time officers arrived on scene, the crowd had already dispersed.

On Wednesday, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said he was horrified by the videos and vowed to address the violence.

Town officials held a Wednesday meeting to find ways to prevent an incident like that from happening again.

Police are still trying to identify and find the suspects and victims involved.
