INDIAN HEAD, Md. (WMAR) — A United States Navy police sergeant is dead after crashing his car into a tree overnight Wednesday in Charles County.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. on the southbound side of Maryland route 224 near Sweden Point Road in Indian Head.
Maryland State Police say 34-year-old Anthony Oglesby Jr., of Bowie, was on duty driving a marked Ford Taurus Police car, when for some reason he drove off the road and hit a tree.
Investigators believe the tree then fell on top of the car, which caught fire.
Oglesby was pronounced dead on scene.
Police are still working to determine how and why Oglesby crashed.
Roads were re-opened after about four hours.
