PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY — A Montgomery County Police officer was shot and a suspect was killed after a police involved shooting in Laurel on Tuesday.

MCP officers were trying to serve a warrant to a man named Shawn Braddy. Braddy was wanted for a homicide that occurred in Jacksonville, Florida.

Authorities say he opened fire on officers, tried to run off, but was shot and killed. He was wanted for murder of Tierra McDaniel, whose family told news outlets in Jacksonville that McDaniel was the mother of two of Braddy’s children. She was trying to get away from him and in the process of getting a restraining order.

The family claims that Braddy shot her while she was holding her five-year-old child. He was traced to Laurel.

Braddy has not been officially identified, but our sister station, WJLA, is reported on Wednesday the detective who had been shot is named Donnie Oaks.

This is not the first time he’s been shot while on duty. He was also hit while working back in 2007. Authorities say he was part of the US Marshal’s Task Force, which is why he was working in a different jurisdiction.

Montgomery County Police tweeted, overnight, that he was out of surgery and is said to be doing okay.

MCP said they will provide updates as additional information is confirmed.
