BALTIMORE — Maryland State Police are warning of a telephone scam that falsely claims to be from Publishers Clearing House.

The scam tells the person who answers, that they “won the grand prize," but only if they pay a $250 tax costs fee.

Most recently people in the Upper Eastern Shore have reported getting calls from someone claiming to be “Agent John Clark” with Publishers Clearing House. Clark tells the people to wire cash or gift cards in order to claim the grand prize.

Maryland State Police say Publishers Clearing House and other sweepstakes don't require winners to pay any money up front.

To report a scam, contact the Federal Trade Commission or call them at 1-877-FTC-HELP.
