Maryland State Police are investigating a serious crash on Wednesday on New Washington Road at Nicodemus Road.

According to preliminary investigation, officials reveal that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, operated by Richard Hayes, was stopped on westbound Nicodemus Rd, at the intersection with New Washington Rd and

At the same time, a Ford Explorer, operated by Kimberly Stem, was traveling on northbound New Washington Rd, approaching the intersection with Nicodemus Rd.

For reasons unknown, as Stem approached the intersection, Hayes accelerated from his stopped position and entered into the northbound lane of travel, directly in front of Stem’s vehicle.

Stem was unable to avoid the collision and her vehicle struck Hayes’ side door. This caused the pickup to overturn and Hayes' and his son were trapped in the vehicle.

Both occupants of the pickup were taken to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center by the Maryland State Police Aviation Division.

Stem, was transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center for evaluation and treatment.
