DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (WMAR) — A Maryland Mayor has been sentenced to two years in jail for misconduct in office, but the Judge said he would only have to spend a weekend of that in jail.
In June, Maryland State Prosecutor Charlton Howard charged District Heights Mayor Eddie Martin for illegally buying around $50,000 worth of fireworks with city money.
Martin falsely claimed the fireworks would be used for the city, but instead really bought them for someone else for his own benefit.
"Mr. Martin abused the trust of the residents of District Heights and the privileges of his office. He has now been held accountable. We will continue to do our best to ensure public officials discharge their duties responsibly” said Howard.
As part of his sentence, Martin will be placed on five years of supervised probation, and have to pay $22,252.50 in restitution.
