The last time Baltimore City Fire lost a member in the line of duty was Lt. James Bethea.
Lt. Bathea died in November of 2014. Fire crews had cleared the scene of a fire in East Baltimore. Lt. Bethea, a Safety Officer for BCFD, fell through a collapsed floor while crews were clearing a fire.
It would be 6 hours before anyone realized he was missing. His death led to changes within the department.
