Howard County kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

COLUMBIA, Md. — Hispanic Heritage Month started Tuesday and it runs through October 15.

Howard County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball kicked off the month -long celebration by announcing the newly formulated La Alianza Latina Workgroup.

It will be made up of 16 Howard County residents, representing backgrounds throughout Central and South America.

The workgroup will address the concerns of the Latino and Immigrant community including access to community resources, support for starting a business or buying a home, health disparities and outcomes and ensuring support for Latinos in Howard County schools.

"This workgroup not only ensures a seat at the table but access to government to implement long lasting change."

Ball also announced that the county will observe Indigenous People’s Day in place of Columbus Day.
