CUMBERLAND, Md. — A missing Kentucky man died in a car crash on Wednesday in Allegany County.

Shortly after 7:50 a.m., the Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack was notified that a Chevrolet Tahoe was found down an embankment on eastbound Interstate 68. Troopers were told that the vehicle was about 50 yards off the road.

The driver, 31-year-old Avery Smothers, of Lexington, Kentucky, was found and declared dead at the scene.

According to officials, Smothers had possibly been ejected from the vehicle, which traveled off the roadway, struck a tree and rolled numerous times. Smothers had also been reported missing on March 3. His family members told investigators that he left Kentucky on February 26 and was driving to visit some relatives in Maryland at the time of his disappearance.

The cause is currently under investigation.
