BALTIMORE — This year Fort McHenry is preparing to honor its role in American history, but virtually.

On Monday, they held a flag raising ceremony over the fort.

The raising will be a part of a video the fort will post online. to honor Defenders' Day, the holiday celebrating the defense of the city from invading British forces.

"After the 25-hour bombardment by British ships, the large 30x42 foot flag was raised, and the morning guns sounded, and when the smoke cleared, Baltimore stood, and withstood the bombardment. And the big flag went up and Francis Scott Key saw the flag and wrote the words that would become our national anthem."

Defenders' Day this year is Saturday, Sept. 12.

They will release their virtual flag raising the day after. Because of the pandemic, they will not be doing any in-person celebrations.
