BALTIMORE — Johns Hopkins Campus Security is investigating an email scam that has been circulating, targeting faculty and staff.

The emails falsely claim to be from university department heads and sometimes even use the names of employees.

Normally the sender states they're in an important meeting and request a cell phone number from the recipient.

A text message is then sent to the number, asking for the recipient to buy a gift card and text back the code on the back of the card.

Campus security is telling anyone receiving a similar email, to not open it and report it to them at 410-516-4600.
