BALTIMORE — 50 billboards have been placed around the area as part of the initiative to stop the purchase of illegal guns.

The billboards say "Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail...don't lie for the other guy.

This initiative is with ATF Baltimore and the National Shooting Sports Foundation in hopes of keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them.

"Keeping guns out of the hands of people who aren't supposed to have it is our highest priority," said Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison. "This will take a concerted and sustained effort by all of us as individuals, but by all of us as organizations and by members of our community. We know it's not going to be easy, but it can be done."

It's meant to remind people that lying on federal forms and buying a gun for someone who is prohibited from having one is a federal crime.

This campaign will last one month and began more than 10 years ago and is fully funded by the firearms industry.

The program also helps ATF educate firearms retailers to be better prepared to deter potential straw purchases.
