LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Sheriff's deputy in training shot a knife wielding suspect, who seconds before stabbed his field training officer in Lexington Park.

St. Mary's County DFC Carl Ball and Dylan Glenn were at the Big Lots on Tuesday afternoon searching for John Sherman Greenwell, who was accused of stealing from the store.

When they finally located Greenwell, he allegedly pulled a large knife from his coat and stabbed deputy Ball in the hand.

Glenn came to his field trainer's aid and took Greenwell to the ground.

Officials say Greenwell then tried to stab Glenn, who in defense shot him in the arm.

Ball and the suspect were each taken to area trauma centers by helicopter. Glenn was not injured.

Body-worn camera footage from both deputies and in-store video surveillance is being reviewed as part of a routine internal investigation.

Ball has already been released from the hospital, while Greenwell is expected to leave Wednesday in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information on the incident should call Detective Austin Schultz at 301-475-4200 extension 71953.
