LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (WMAR) — A man is dead after shooting multiple times at deputies during a standoff Monday in Lexington Park.

St. Mary's County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 19800 block of Three Notch Road for reports of a man assaulting a woman and making homicidal threats.

The victim told arriving units that 43-year-old John Francis Tippett Jr., had access to several weapons, and threatened to shoot responding officers. It was later discovered that Tippett had multiple open warrants for his arrest.

Tippett had already broken out the victim's windshield as she was trying to get away.

While deputies and the victim were speaking, Tippett allegedly began firing multiple gunshots from the home.

A hostage negotiation team was then called in.

Officials say Tippett repeatedly went in and out of his home, each time shooting at deputies and a compressed gas tank in the driveway.

At some point, an unknown number of deputies returned fire, killing Tippett.

Following the shootout, the State Fire Marshal was called to investigate a suspicious bag found in the driveway.

Police didn't reveal what was in the bag.

No other information was immediately available.
