ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office has launched a public database, making it possible for citizens to look-up active arrest warrants.

Sheriff Jim Fredericks is calling the initiative "Safe Surrender."

He sees it helping two ways, by reducing the number of outstanding county warrants and keeping deputies safe.

“This program has been in the works for close to a year and it could not come at a better time," said Fredericks. "With recent shootings and deaths involving the service of criminal warrants, increasing information to the public and creating a safer warrant service environment can potentially save the lives of citizens and law enforcement officers.”

The database reportedly contains about 9000 county warrants ranging from simple traffic offenses to felonies.

According to Fredericks, not everyone knows they have a warrant. He says the database provides information on how to handle the situation in that sort of scenario.

“There are certainly instances when someone may not be aware they have a warrant and this program will allow for the discovery of, and safe service of their warrant,” said Fredericks.
