Guidelines suggest added sugar consumption limits for kids

Posted

Monday, the American Heart Association released new guidelines for added sugar consumption by kids.

The AHA's research shows children and teens shouldn't intake more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day and they shouldn't have more than 8 ounces of sugary drinks a week.

Those added sugars can be disguised under names such as high fructose corn syrup, fructose and fruit. Anything ended in -ose is just a synonym for sugar.

Courtney Ferreira, a nutritionist at the University of Maryland Medical Center joined ABC2's In Focus to dicuss the new guidelines.
