Are GMOs really bad for you?

Posted

More companies are labeling foods that contain GMOs, but research found that the foods are safe.

General Mills, Kellog's, ConAgra, and the Mars Candy Company are going to label products that contain genetically modified organisms. The companies chose to do so because of a new law in Vermont requiring it. That law takes effect this summer.

Almost 80 percent of all processed foods are genetically modified. Most research shows that GMOs won't hurt you or your children.

Dietician Laura Smith wants more tests. Corn and soybeans contain the highest percentage of GMOs and they're in a lot of foods. Smith thinks scientists should start there.

"Of those foods, they've all been deemed safe," she said. "But of course more research needs to be done specifically for each crop as far as whether they pose any health risks."
