ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — On Friday, dozens of people showed up to honor the late Congressman Elijah Cummings in Ellicott City.

The 68 year old passed away early Thursday morning at Gilchrist Hospice Care following a long illness.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball hosted the vigil and wreath laying to honor the memory and legacy of Cummings.

The ceremony was held at Cummings' Howard County District Office on Main Street. Ball spoke about the champion Cummings was and the void he now leaves behind.

"There's a void not only in Howard County and throughout Maryland, but there's a void in our hearts and to have a giant of a man, someone who was sometimes at the final hour at the last line of defense for our values and where we're at a crossroads for who were going to be as a country, we all need to come together to unite and stand upon his shoulders to become our best selves," said Ball.

Cummings served in the House of Representatives for 23 years and was also the chairman of the Oversight and Reform committee.
