It happens every year. Despite the best of intentions, your annual photo of holiday cheer brings holiday jeers. Kristina Guerrero and professional photographer Jenna Bishop have four of the biggest mistakes families make taking holiday portraits and how to avoid them.
1. Lousy Lighting
You want to move to a place, maybe next to a window, where you get some nice side light, nice front light. Try and turn on as many lights in the house as you can, just to get as much light on you as possible. Also, don't use your tree light as your only lighting. Otherwise you'll be dark and the tree will be really light.
2. Photo Bombing Background
People get a little bit concerned about themselves and aren't paying attention to their environment. Take a quick second to scan and remove anything in the background that might ruin your shot.
3. Unworthy Wardrobe
Another mistake that families make is not coordinating their outfits. It does depend on your family's sense of humor so use your best judgement. Coordinating your colors; maybe picking a warm or cool color scheme and getting everybody on the same page can really draw the photo together.
4. Painful Posing
The biggest mistake families make is not relaxing and capturing that relaxed, organic family moment. We're trying to show relationships. Try leaning in or putting your arms around one another. You'll show your affection and relax at the same time.
