Officials are investigating the death of a man found in a Gaithersburg townhouse fire as a homicide.

Montgomery County police made the announcement Tuesday.

Police say the body of 63-year-old Steve Skalabrin was discovered last week in the debris. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters were called just after 10 p.m. March 29 for a report of the fire.

Two other people who lived in the home escaped the blaze.

Montgomery County Police Capt. Darren Francke says Skalabrin lived as a tenant in the basement of the home with two other roommates.

Both the cause of the fire and where it started haven't yet been determined.
