COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A man died New Year's morning on the University of Maryland campus, after a gun was fired inside a rideshare service vehicle.

It happened shortly after 2 am on Ehrensberger Drive, near the University of Maryland Global Campus and Marriott Hotel parking garage.

Police believe the man was intoxicated when he was picked up from an off-campus location.

At some point during the ride the man became sick, causing the driver to have to stop and clean the vehicle.

That's when a strange turn of events took place.

As the driver was cleaning, the man reportedly climbed into the driver's seat.

After being told to move, he climbed into the backseat.

That's when the driver claims to have heard a gunshot and noticed the man slumped over.

At this point, investigators haven't found any signs of a struggle or foul play.

The official cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Although the incident occurred on campus, neither person involved is associated with the university.
