Maryland State Police warn about prank calls

The Maryland State Police has issued an alert about a prank call that uses the department's phone number.

People who have received the call told investigators they got an automated message from the State Police Criminal Enforcement Division. The message said an internet crime occurred and they were instructed to call the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division at 410-953-8200.

The Maryland State Police is not making these calls and is asking anyone who gets this type of call to hang up.

The department said there is no apparent connection to extortion or theft. Those who have received this prank phone call have been from Maryland, New York and Hawaii.
