COLUMBIA, Md. — A Columbia man has been arrested and charged for committing sex offenses against a 17-year-old female student at Wilde Lake High School in 2019.

At the time of the crime, 29-year-old Divaughn Vanez Furby, of Footed Ridge, was a teaching assistant at the school.

Howard County Police began investigating Furby after they received information that he had engaged in a sexual relationship with a minor. After interviewing the victim and other parties and analyzing cell phone data, investigators charged Furby with multiple counts of sex offenses.

Detectives, however, believe the crimes occurred off of school property.

Furby has not been employed by the school system since August 2019. He was a part-time employee at the Roger Carter Community Center, in Ellicott City, but he no longer works there, as a result of his arrest.

He is facing a series of sex offense charges and is being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.
