Baltimore County Police said a woman was killed in a potentially targeted shooting late Thursday in Overlea.

Officers responded to the area around Belair Road and Overlea Avenue at about 11 p.m., when they discovered a woman who they determined was the victim of a homicide.

The woman was identified as 25-year-old Tracey Elizabeth Carrington of the 1100 block of Glemsford Road.

Police said Carrington and a friend left S & S Lounge, 6800 Belair Road, around 8:40 p.m. The two were getting into Carrington's car, parked on Overlea Avenue, when an unknown suspect walked up and started shooting, striking Carrington multiple times. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction.

Police and EMS responded, but Carrington was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carrington is a former student-athlete at Morgan State University. The school released this statement:

"The Morgan State University family is very saddened to have learned of the tragedy involving former student-athlete and graduate Tracey Carrington. The unfortunate death of this Morgan alum is a true loss. We extend our condolences to Tracey's family and friends along with our hope that those responsible for her death are brought swiftly to justice."

Carrington graduated in 2015 with a degree in sociology. She was a guard on the basketball team.

The Baltimore County Police Department's Homicide unit is investigating the shooting as targeted since no robbery or other crime was committed and Carrington's friend was unharmed.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call 410-307-2020.
