Corrections officer charged in drug smuggle plot

A 25-year employee of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correction Services has beencharged with attempting to deliver drugs to an inmate.

Officials say 52-year-old Patrick Merson faces 11 charges related to a plan to bring heroin, Oxycontin, and synthetic marijuana into the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown. 

Investigators believe Merson, who lives in Pennsylvania, was working with a relative of an inmate to deliver drugs from an address in Smithsburg, Md.
