Baltimore County police have charged a man who they said tried to ram a Maryland Natural Resources Police officer in a park Tuesday.

Police said they turned himself in Wednesday. Harrison Lee Bartels, 20, has been charged with assaulting a Maryland Natural Resources Police corporal at Patapsco State Park.

Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thompson says the confrontation happened Tuesday night at Patapsco Valley State Park near Catonsville as the officer checked to make sure all visitors had left. The officer approached an SUV on foot. That's when Thompson says the driver reversed and hit the officer's truck. She says the driver turned around to ram the officer, and as the officer stepped out of the way, his arm went through the driver's side window.

She says the officer fired, but the SUV took off.

The officer was treated at a hospital and released.
