Bloody footprints led police to a murder victim in northwest Baltimore and her boyfriend was charged with the crime, police said.

Officers charged William Mason, 32, of Liberty Heights Avenue with murder as the primary suspect in the death of his girlfriend 23-year-old Khaya Lambert.

On June 21, officers responded to the 3900 block of Liberty Heights Avenue for an assault. Arriving officers found Mason outside on the sidewalk covered in blood. The assault victim told police he was in his apartment when he heard a loud crash. When he went to investigate he found Mason, soaked in blood and holding a knife. He tried to stab the victim and then chased him out of the apartment.

Officers investigating the assault followed Mason’s bloody footprints to another apartment in the building with the door ajar. Inside, police found Lambert who had been shot and stabbed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mason is facing multiple assault  and murder charges.

He' s being held at Central Booking without bail.

Lambert's family has set up a GoFundMe page for her memorial.
