Man federally indicted for carrying gun that discharged and struck officer

A Baltimore man is federally indicted  for possessing a firearm that discharged, striking and injuring a police officer that was trying to place him into custody.

On Thursday, a Baltimore Grand Jury charged 35-year-old Allen Johnson on multiple drug and gun crimes.

It was November 29, 2017, when Baltimore Police officers responded to the 800 block of Bridgeview Avenue, on information that Johnson was at the location armed with a gun in his waistband.

Upon locating Johnson, officers approached at which time Johnson turned away and reached for his waist band.

Related: A struggle then ensued. As officers attempted to take  Johnson to the ground, the firearm in his possession discharged, striking an officer in the right hand. 

Other officers on scene deployed a taser, subduing Johnson and placing him under arrest. In addition to the firearm, units recovered numerous vials of narcotics.

The injured officer was treated at an area hospital.

Members of the United States Attorneys Office, ATF, and Baltimore Police Department conducted the investigation, and announced the indictment.
