Corrections sergeant convicted of assaulting inmate

A court Thursday, convicted a Maryland Corrections sergeant of misconduct and assault on an inmate.

At trial, prosecutors' presented video evidence from September 21, 2016, capturing Sergeant Chance Hellum striking and choking the inmate inside the Baltimore Central Booking Intake Center. 

In a released statement, Baltimore City States Attorney Marilyn Mosby said, "A prisoner's wellbeing is entrusted to the care, discipline, and supervision of correctional officers, who are entrusted with a great deal of autonomy that should not be abused".

Sentencing is scheduled for March 27. Hellum faces a combined maximum of 29 years behind bars on both charges.
