A shooting in Baltimore City prompted nearby public schools to be placed on lockdown on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say it was around 3:19 p.m. when officers patrolling the McCulloh Homes area heard gunfire.

Units soon found an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

While searching the surrounding area, officers saw and began chasing a suspect fleeing on foot.

During this time, Baltimore City Public School officials say four nearby schools were placed on a brief lockdown including Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary, Renaissance and New Hope Academies and Booker T. Washington Middle School.

Officials say the suspect discarded a handgun during the foot pursuit. Investigators were able to later recover the weapon.

The lockdowns have since been lifted.

Police say the shooting victim was transported to an area hospital, where his condition is unknown.
