A former state employee who used to own and operate a tax preparation business pleaded guilty to filing fraudulent returns on Friday.

According to the Office of the State Prosecutor, 66-year-old Floyd Briscoe Wright owned and operated Briscoe & Associates LLC, a Baltimore tax preparation business, while working at the Maryland Department of Human Services.

They said he plead guilty as part on an ongoing scheme involving the filing of numerous fraudulent returns. While he was preparing returns, Wright would enter false adjusted gross incomes based on false and inflated business losses, false charitable contributions, fictitious businesses and/or other false filing which minimized his client's Maryland tax liabilities and increase their tax refunds.

"Tax preparers have an obvious responsibility to file honest tax returns," said State Prosecutor Davitt. "Maryland citizens and the State itself needs to be protected from tax preparers who engage in this kind of fraud."

Wright's sentencing will be on April 2.
