Police ID off-duty officer involved in shooting

Anne Arundel County police released the name of the off-duty Baltimore police officer involved in a shooting Saturday. 

Officer John Bilheimer is an 18-year veteran with the Baltimore Police Department's Special Operations Section. He said he was in the 100 block of Homewood Road when a male approached him. The male announced a robbery and produced a handgun.

Bilheimer was able to retrieve his gun and fire at the suspect. The suspect then fled on foot and collapsed a short distance from the scene.

The suspect is identified as Edel Cato Moreland, 32, who has no fixed address. The suspect's gun was recovered from the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled that Moreland's death resulted from four gunshot wounds sustained during the attempted robbery. 

The preliminary investigated showed that Officer Bilheimer fired five rounds in the mid and upper body of Moreland. 

Anne Arundel County homicide detectives are still investigating this case. Officer Bilheimer remains on administrative leave in accordance with the Baltimore police departmental policy.
