Police arrested a man on animal cruelty charges after he ended the life of his dog.

On Tuesday, neighbors called police after hearing gunfire on Master Derby Court in Annapolis.

The homeowner, William Harrell, told officers his two-year-old German Shepherd ate a foam pillow a few days ago and became ill.  Harrell said his dog had not eaten or drank water for days and was vomiting and having tremors.

Harrell decided to end the dog's life and shot it with a .25 caliber handgun. The 53-year-old then buried the dog in his backyard.

Officers called Animal Control, who came to the home and took the dog's remains.

Harrell was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty, discharging a firearm in a residential area, and reckless endangerment.
