I am writing to inform you that an individual who contracts with the University Health Center and Maryland Athletics on a part-time basis has tested positive for COVID-19.

Upon learning of this positive case late last night, we immediately began notifying the individuals who we know came into direct contact with the individual and provided CDC guidance. This guidance indicates that individuals who have possible exposure to a person with the COVID-19 illness should remain home for 14 days with self observation and stay alert to possible symptoms.

In addition, we have received notification of a second confirmed case of COVID-19 from a student who participated in Education Abroad in Barcelona, Spain. This student returned to their away-from-campus home.

It is imperative for every member of our community to help prevent community spread of this virus. We urge all members of our campus to be watchful of symptoms and avoid contact with others.

Here is the information that we are sending to those who were possibly exposed:

Self-observation means you should remain alert for symptoms. If you feel feverish or develop a cough or difficulty breathing during the self-observation period, you should take your temperature, self-isolate, limit contact with others, and seek advice by telephone from a healthcare provider or the local health department to determine whether medical evaluation is needed.

As much as possible, stay away from other people in your home. Do not go to work, school, or public areas. Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.

The University of Maryland continues to take proactive steps to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Every member of our community plays an essential role in prevention. Wash your hands frequently, practice social distancing, and stay vigilant about your health. For more information, please visit umd.edu/virusinfo.
