A third-grade student attending Gwynns Falls Elementary School died Wednesday after suffering a fall in the school's hallway on Sept. 24.
"We are deeply saddened to learn that late last evening, our student passed away. Our deepest thoughts and concerns are with the family and the entire Gwynns Falls school community at this time," reads a statement issued from school officials. "Counselors are at the school to help children and staff members process the emotions they may be feeling and will remain there as long as necessary."
The child was taken to the school's health suite before being taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital by ambulance.
"According to investigators, the student suffered a traumatic head injury as a result of a fall," police spokesman T.J. Smith said. "Tragically, despite medical efforts the nine year-old died at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At this time, this incident appears to be a tragic accident.
"The final determination regarding cause and manner of death will be made by the Medical Examiner’s Office."
