A White House official says Attorney General Eric Holder is resigning, and that he will stay at the Department of Justice until a successor is chosen.

Holder was sworn in as the 82nd attorney general of the United States in 2009 after serving as President Bill Clinton's deputy attorney general.

There has been speculation in the last several months that he was planning an exit strategy. The Washington Post reported Holder had not made a commitment to the position through the end of this year.

President Obama is expected to address the nation regarding the resignation this afternoon.
