April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In support of all sexual assault victims GBMC is holding "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" Saturday April 6th.

The event starts at 9am, and if you haven't registered yet you can sign-up day of. The one mile walk will start at 10am and will take you around the GBMC campus. Pre-registration is $30 for general participants and $15 for students. All participants will get a t-shirt and be able to take part in the post-walk party.

The event is hosted by the GBMC Foundation and presented by the GBMC Volunteer Auxiliary. It's an opportunity to educate the community about sexual assault and domestic violence against men and women. Participants will walk a mile around GBMC’s campus to shed light on and show support for an extremely important issue for people of all ages.

“GBMC’s Walk a Mile event has continued to grow over the past four years and we are proud of the impact we are having within the community,” explained Laura Clary, RN, FNE-A/P, SANE-A, Clinical Program Manager for the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) and Domestic Violence (DV) Program at GBMC. “As conversations surrounding sexual assault continue, we knew it was important to change our event to be welcoming for all to attend and to support everyone who is affected by sexual assault, which unfortunately includes women, men, and children.”

Proceeds from the event go to GBMC's SAFE and DV programs. Registered nurses in the program are trained and certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing to provide services for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. “Our SAFE Program is the region’s most comprehensive sexual assault, abuse, and domestic violence program, and I am proud of our team for providing the highest quality victim services and education to our community” said John B. Chessare, M.D., MPH President and CEO of the GBMC HealthCare System.
