Everyday she puts on her vest, and puts her life on the line to protect others. Now she's up for a prestigious award, for four-legged heroes, the finalists will be announced Wednesday, July 25.

Summer is an 8-year-old Yellow Labrador from Mount Airy. She's a retired military dog now working as a TSA bomb-sniffing K9 with the Amtrak Police Department at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Summer is up for the American Humane Hero Dog Awards, in the military category. Because before she was doing inspections at Union Station, Summer was deployed to Afghanistan with the Marines.

"She's been in firefights," said Sergeant Micah Jones with the Amtrak Police Department. "She's found IEDs and VBEDS and it's just an honor to work her, that an animal like that saved thousands and thousands of lives."

The seven American Humane Hero Dog finalists will be announced Wednesday afternoon, then voting will begin for the finalists here.
